Miles Everette’s review frames Dragon’s Breath as an album built less around Wu-Tang mythology than around Inspectah Deck’s grounded fascination with work, survival, money, loyalty and betrayal. Rather than presenting the street life entirely through larger-than-life imagery, Deck repeatedly focuses on its routines and consequences: shifts, debts, hustles, old friends, changing circumstances and the uncomfortable distance between where people started and where they ended up.
“The System” is singled out as one of the album’s strongest moments because Deck turns that perspective inward, connecting his history and personal relationships to the practical realities behind the grind. “Funny Style” receives similar praise for transforming a long-running grievance into an actual story with a beginning, middle and end, while “Solitude” extends the album’s interest in labor, age and survival.
The extensive guest list is another major part of the review. Everette highlights strong contributions from Skyzoo, Mickey Factz and KXNG Crooked, while identifying Sa-Roc’s appearance on “Divine Protection” as one of the project’s standout performances, with Che Noir close behind. The sheer depth of experienced lyricists gives the nineteen-track album enough competition to continually push Deck.
The review is not without criticism. At roughly sixty-seven minutes, the album is considered longer than its strongest material can comfortably support, causing portions of the middle to sag. “Anointed,” “Flight School” and “Cold Case” receive particular criticism, although the closing stretch benefits from the arrival of Czarface and production from 7L and Pat Vandyke.
Ultimately, the review sees Dragon’s Breath as another reminder of Deck’s place as a veteran whose best writing still comes from specificity. Beneath an enormous cast of collaborators and nineteen tracks, the strongest material is rooted in ordinary details about work, aging, loyalty and the people left behind as circumstances change.
