This album spotlight hopefully puts more people onto an artist whose work I think deserves attention.
Eclyse has also been around for a long time. Born in Brighton, England and now living in Jacksonville, Florida, his Bandcamp catalog stretches back to at least 2014 and contains an extensive run of solo releases, producer collaborations, and joint projects.
That history matters because The Shadow That Drank The Fire does not sound like an artist still trying to figure out what his world looks like. Eclyse already has one. Ancient civilizations, science fiction, psychedelics, mythology, horror, occult imagery, altered consciousness, addiction, recovery, technology, death, and self-transformation all coexist naturally inside it.
Eclyse describes the album himself as a look into his darker and grittier side, backed by cinematic production and centered around climbing into the shadows of the mind to search for the hidden fire among life's extremes. That description fits. The album constantly travels into strange places, but there is usually something recognizably human buried underneath the surrealism.
The production comes from Someone, SMG, Omar Glomar, Skinny Bonez Tha Godfatha, and YLM, with Omar Glomar also handling the mixing and mastering. Manage of Lab79 and Grim Moses provide the album's two guest verses.
Eclyse also hand-painted the cover himself. A brick wall surrounds an open doorway, with a dark figure and two glowing red eyes visible behind a wall of fire. The fire casts a dim glow or reflection across the dark floor outside the doorway. It feels less like something escaping from the room and more like something inside waiting for you to enter.
That is a pretty good visual introduction to the album.

“The Shadow That Drank The Fire”
Produced by Someone, the spoken intro establishes the mythology behind the title.
Eclyse describes a shadow that has spent years gathering darkness until it eventually encounters an omnipotent fire. Instead of the fire destroying the shadow, the shadow consumes it and gains power, knowledge, and a kind of immortality.
That idea becomes the foundation for everything that follows.
The shadow can be read as the darker material a person accumulates over a lifetime. Pain, addiction, fear, isolation, strange interests, and the parts of ourselves we normally keep hidden all belong there. The fire feels like creativity, knowledge, purpose, and whatever allows those experiences to become something more than damage.
The shadow does not disappear when it finds the fire. It absorbs it.

Opening the Hidden Room
“Chamber of Secrets”
Produced by SMG, “Chamber of Secrets” introduces the version of Eclyse that dominates much of the album. He is part emcee, part warrior, part mystic, and part mad scientist.
He moves through demons, wolves, celestial planes, prophecy, weapons, ancient Egypt, and altered consciousness, but there are grounded ideas underneath all of it. He talks about buried pain returning, learning how much pressure he can withstand, thinking for yourself, and recognizing the path ahead.
The chamber of secrets is really Eclyse's mind. The rest of the album feels like him opening the door and letting us see what has been stored inside.

Ancient Power Meets Experience
“Levitate Over The Sands Of Egypt”
“Levitate Over The Sands Of Egypt,” featuring Manage and produced by Omar Glomar and YLM, pushes Eclyse into supernatural battle-rap territory. Dragons wake from everlasting sleep, demon codes cause seizures, swords move through telekinesis, ghosts appear, and a coven levitates above the sands of Egypt.
Eclyse rarely allows a normal battle rhyme to remain normal. Everything gets enlarged until the confrontation feels capable of disturbing the physical laws of the universe.
Manage takes a very different approach. His verse is more grounded in experience. He touches on burned bridges, poverty, drugs, principles, changing surroundings, getting older, and refusing to chase trends. While Eclyse is summoning dragons and manipulating supernatural forces, Manage sounds like someone who has simply been through enough life to know what he stands for.
He talks about standing by his principles, moving forward without looking back, and being the “illest out without shouting for the viral.” By the end, there is Guinness, old classics on vinyl, growing wiser, and one hand on the Bible.
The contrast works. Eclyse represents ancient and supernatural power. Manage brings veteran perspective and independence. Both are ultimately talking about refusing to follow someone else's path.

Searching for the Medicine
“Medicine Man”
“Medicine Man,” produced by SMG, pushes further into Eclyse's psychedelic and spiritual side.
Pentagrams, hieroglyphics, Mayan villages, psychic visions, tribal knowledge, craniotomies, and conversations with a medicine man all appear. Eclyse writes like consciousness itself has become another landscape he can travel through.
But one of the quieter ideas underneath all of that imagery is change.
He admits that he was stuck in his ways and is now “collecting change like wishing wells.” That gives the medicine another possible meaning.
The medicine is not only psychedelics, mysticism, or some ancient secret. It can also be the willingness to break old patterns and become something different.

Decorating the Grave
“Flowers For Caskets”
Produced by Omar Glomar, “Flowers For Caskets” might have one of the titles that best captures Eclyse's overall aesthetic.
Something beautiful is being placed directly beside death.
The verses are loaded with sorcery, planets, monks, corpses, altered states, Mayan warships, tentacles, gods, fatality references, blood, and cinematic violence. Eclyse describes his recording space as a house of a thousand corpses and the microphone like a morgue filled with murdered verses.
It is violent, but it does not feel like autobiography. The violence is exaggerated into fantasy and used as part of the competition.
The song is basically Eclyse painting battle rap with the strangest colors available to him.

When Reality Stops Making Sense
“Unexplained Phenomena”
“Unexplained Phenomena,” produced by SMG, lives up to its name.
Cadavers, cybernetic technology, acid trips, strange planets, space laboratories, Orion's Belt, seismic waves, Shinobi, Kenobi, Sub-Zero, and hyperspace all collide inside two verses.
This is one of the clearest examples of how Eclyse makes references that should have nothing to do with one another feel like they came from the same place.
There is also a much more human line buried inside all the chaos when he says his life contains pain, but the great escape is decades away.
For an album filled with death, ghosts, corpses, and the underworld, death itself is not being presented as the escape. The escape is the music.

Rewriting Reality
“Reinvented Existence”
“Reinvented Existence,” featuring Grim Moses and produced by Omar Glomar, makes the album's fascination with transformation explicit.
Eclyse describes writing as if every session with the pen rebuilds reality. Cenobites, the Book of the Dead, psychiatric wards, Pandora's Box, drugs, devils, sorcery, and disembodied voices all pass through the verse.
Near the end, a voice from the abyss tells him that his own voice is the elixir to live. That may be one of the most important ideas on the album. Writing is not only something Eclyse uses to show skill. It is something he uses to reconstruct himself.
Grim Moses takes the same concept and expands it outward. His verse moves through omnipotence, quantum leaps, particle colliders, microscopic and megalithic scales, altered physics, prophecy, and thoughts powerful enough to move society.
One line especially fits the concept when he says that a “computer generated aura couldn't simulate what my pencil graphs.” Surrounded by mathematics, physics, and cosmic imagery, the pencil becomes almost like an instrument mapping a reality that only exists inside the artist's mind.
Grim also brings in ideas about truth, reciprocity, independent thought, and the limitations people place on themselves.
Eclyse reinvents existence by changing himself through the pen. Grim Moses sounds like he intends to rearrange existence around him.

Escaping Ordinary Dimensions
“The 5th Dimension”
“The 5th Dimension,” produced by SMG, removes whatever boundaries were still left.
Osiris, Thor, Uhtred, sandworms, Zeus, Pyramid Head, black holes, cybernetic arms, underwater breathing, psychedelic consciousness, and Armageddon all show up.
Eclyse repeatedly describes his mind as something that has moved beyond normal human limitations.
That happens throughout the album. Ancient knowledge, futuristic technology, psychedelics, spirituality, and imagination all become different ways of reaching beyond ordinary perception.
The fifth dimension does not need to be taken as an actual physical destination. It is the place Eclyse reaches when his imagination no longer has to obey normal rules.

Becoming Something Else
“Shape Shifting”
“Shape Shifting,” produced by SMG, turns transformation physical.
Eclyse drinks lightning, steals intelligence from aliens, mutates in laboratories, experiments with animal traits, walks between life and death, and crosses barriers between different forms of existence.
The title also describes his writing style.
He can move from mythology to horror, from science fiction to psychedelic imagery, and from battle rap into something personal without treating those things like separate subjects.
The mind becomes the laboratory. The songs are the records of what happened during the experiment.

Bending Reality Through the Pen
“Bent Cutlery”
Produced by Omar Glomar, “Bent Cutlery” is where the real-world foundation underneath all of the transformation imagery becomes much clearer.
Eclyse opens with a simple statement about being living proof that addiction can lose. Later, he says he “lived the most when I kicked the drink.”
Those lines change the way some of the album can be heard.
All of the mutations, alternate dimensions, altered states, inner power, and transformation suddenly have something concrete underneath them. Eclyse is not only imagining what it would mean to become a different person. He has lived through a version of that process.
The second verse becomes unexpectedly grounded as he talks about leaving the past where it belongs, living in the moment, finding strength internally, and allowing fear to lose.
The hook says he can bend the universe like cutlery. In real life, he already managed to bend the direction he was traveling.

Creating a Cinematic World
“Artful Syndicate”
“Artful Syndicate,” produced by Someone, brings Eclyse back into full cinematic battle mode.
Van Gogh, the Headless Horseman, Kano, mad scientists, Mortal Kombat, Atlantis, Gotham, liquid swords, and strange creatures fill the verses.
Eclyse even calls it his “cinematic space.” That phrase could describe the whole album.
He does not simply write images. He writes scenes. You can usually picture whatever bizarre environment he has thrown himself into, even when five completely different references are colliding in the same verse.
The song also reinforces the idea of artistic independence. The world might be strange, but the vision belongs to the people creating it.

Programming the Future
“Cybernetic Transcripts”
“Cybernetic Transcripts,” produced by Skinny Bonez Tha Godfatha, fully embraces the futuristic side of Eclyse's imagination.
Robotic exoskeletons, time travel, quantum drives, mutant cells, cloning, paranormal communication, ultraviolet perception, echolocation, and Chernobyl all appear.
The verses almost sound like transmissions coming back from an altered future version of Eclyse.
What makes his version of the future interesting is that technology never replaces the mystical side of the album.
Cybernetics exist beside soothsayers. Scientific mutation exists beside paranormal intelligence. Future technology exists beside ancient forms of perception.
For Eclyse, knowledge does not move in a straight line from primitive to advanced. The ancient, spiritual, futuristic, and unexplained can all exist at once.

Surviving the Winter
“Cold Maneuvers”
Produced by Someone, “Cold Maneuvers” runs more than five minutes and contains four verses, making it easily the album's longest track and an appropriate closer.
Almost everything that appeared earlier returns. Space travel, ancient civilizations, psychedelia, violence, mutation, psychic perception, artificial intelligence, darkness, self-improvement, and artistic competition all circle back.
But the personal material becomes much more visible.
Eclyse talks about hardship teaching him how to step through darkness. He describes his existence as art and says his creativity comes from a dark place.
Then he gets even more direct.
He says that when he was young he learned to hate the mirror, and that it took decades to turn pain into fear and eventually turn that fear into strength.
That might be the real story hiding underneath the entire album.
The gods, monsters, laboratories, blades, dimensions, aliens, psychedelic visions, and supernatural powers can all be read as different ways of describing someone continually rebuilding his relationship with himself.
The final verse also turns toward artificial intelligence, digital conformity, and independent thought. Eclyse tells people to think for themselves and refuses to allow his oddities to become something he needs to eliminate.
The album begins with a shadow accumulating darkness. It ends with Eclyse treating the unusual parts of himself as part of his strength.

Closing Thoughts
Final Thoughts
The Shadow That Drank The Fire is rooted in underground hip-hop, but the real identity of the album comes from the world Eclyse creates around it. Someone, SMG, Omar Glomar, Skinny Bonez Tha Godfatha, and YLM provide cinematic environments that allow ancient history, science fiction, psychedelia, horror, and battle rap to occupy the same space. Omar Glomar's mixing and mastering helps a 13-track album with several producers feel like one continuous experience.
The features are also well chosen. Manage does not try to out-weird Eclyse. He brings experience, principles, independence, and the confidence of someone who has stopped worrying about trends. Grim Moses goes in the opposite direction and pushes the abstraction even further, turning his verse into a collision of metaphysics, physics, spirituality, and human creativity. Both expand Eclyse's ideas without sounding like imitations of him.
Eclyse returns constantly to blades, demons, gods, Egypt, altered states, cybernetics, space, death, ancient civilizations, psychic perception, and supernatural creatures. At times those images overlap heavily from song to song, but they are also what make the album immediately recognizable as his. These do not feel like themes chosen because he needed concepts for 13 tracks. This seems to be the natural language of his imagination.
What keeps the album from becoming nothing but surreal battle rap are the moments when real life breaks through. Addiction can lose. The past can stay behind you. Fear can become strength. A person who once hated the reflection in the mirror can eventually learn how to use what he survived instead of allowing it to control him.
That is where the title makes the most sense to me.
The shadow is never removed. The fire does not destroy it. The shadow consumes the fire and becomes something more powerful because of what it has carried.
For an artist whose Bandcamp catalog reaches back more than a decade, The Shadow That Drank The Fire does not feel like Eclyse suddenly inventing a new identity. It feels more like years of his existing interests, experiences, and artistic language being concentrated into 34 minutes.
And he is not slowing down.

If The Shadow That Drank The Fire is about entering Eclyse's mind for a short time and seeing what it feels like to inhabit that vessel, there is apparently a lot more waiting behind the door.
